CCSP -No till Farm
Greetings,
In 25 years of crop scouting I have never seen anything increase faster than the soybean aphids did last week. We had checked on Tuesday, the 2nd and saw some. There were leaflets that had 50 on them, but the rest of plants were relatively lightly infested. On Friday, I finished the pre-harvest Round-Up on the spring wheat about noon, and checked the aphids. I thought I had not looked in weeks. Every place I looked, they were so thick that counting was not practical. I loaded up the sprayer with Round-Up and Warrior and sprayed. Heavy rain was predicted but never came. I checked the plots again on Tuesday and there were still many live aphids. Today, Thursday, things are looking better. I did not put in Lorsban, mostly because of unexpected guests that come to the plots, so I prefer to avoid the the more toxic chemicals. The perfect weather has apparently been a factor as well as hail damage. I am not sure what the connection is, but if you have not checked your beans, do so immediatly.
We have had an extended rain free period. Are we in a drought?? I doubt it. 80% chance tonight. I would like to get the spring wheat done, but rain would help the cover crop and alfalfa we planted last week.
Have a good week.
