Update for July  6, 2010

CCSP -No till Farm

Greetings,

What a difference to have some heat! Can you believe that after 2 agonizing years of cold summers we actually are ahead on heat units? I have sweet corn tasseling which means eating in 3 weeks! No tassels in the field corn yet but it is not too far away. The corn that is on good ground looks great. That is not the case with all the corn. The thumbnail picture show what the too wet corn looks like. It is interesting to look at the corn that I planted May 22 and how even it is. Even in the low ground. The Laudis weed control is working well. I did the second trip with Round-Up just as the corn was getting too big to get through and felt there really was not the need. The only  problems were right next to the alleys. The burn down I did with the Round-up Valor 2-4D did a really good job too. The only weed problem I have out side of the Alleys is the flax. Timing issues made it really tough to get in with using select right next to corn. Getting the right winds when I was not spraying something else just did not happen this year.

Wheat- I am a little nervous on the wheat. After looking today I see a lot of what appears to be scab in the winter wheat. I was delayed in getting Prosaro on at the proper time so am probably paying the price. The winter wheat has had it's struggles this year with the bad fall, lots of volunteer spring wheat and so forth. The spring wheat is coming on. I know I was in too early and too muddy, but you never know if that is the best conditions you are going to get at the time. I could see every dual track on the low ground for a long time this spring.

Cover crops. We planted cover crops so the we would have something to look at for field days. The weeds came up right along with the cover crops so I am just planning on replanting after the tour. Some of the plots are not coming very well where I applied round-up and 2-4D prior to planting. I mention this since we certainly need to be getting cove on all this PP ground and cover crops really are the answer. Weeds still need to be controlled so we hope to learn some strategies.  Cover crops will be discussed at length at our field day, July 15.

Have a good week.
