CCSP -No till Farm
Grettings,
Back to a rainy spell once again. We just finished seeding winter wheat on Wednesday. It is always nice to get a rain after seeding but a 1/4 inch would have been fine this year! A start was made on combining beans. Sounds like yields are Ok, in the 40 bushel area. The corn has miraculously got to a point where a freeze will not do much harm. A quick Google of warmest Septembers indicated that we just feel short of a record. The whole area from here into Canada either set a record or was 2nd or 3rd. That's 2 years in a row that we have pulled a corn crop away from a disaster. I am seeing some corn break over in the corn on corn in the plots. Since three varieties are involved it appears to be something other than genetics. We have had quite a bit of wind of course, but the corn on corn is what is affected.
Our cover crops have really done well this fall. I tried a few different things, one of them is a pea and radish combination in winter wheat stubble that will be corn next year. I planted both crops with the 30 inch corn planter by first seeding peas and then moving over 15 inches and planting the radishes. The corn will be planted right over the top of the radish rows next spring. This will be what is called a "biological" strip till. We are planning a cover crop field day for October 22, 9"00 AM. We will send out notices closer to the date.
Have a good week.
